Architect: John Bartlett
Products: Custom Monrovia Chevron in Spanish Brown
Construction of the new parish church at Mission Basilica in San Juan Capistrano was completed in 1986. The church is modeled after the Great Stone Church destroyed in the great earthquake of 1812. High fired terracotta Monrovia tiles feature a custom chevron design and Spanish Brown glazing inspired by contemporaneous churches as only a portion of the original church had survived. In 2000, Pope John Paul II proclaimed the Mission Church a basilica, a title only granted to churches with special historic, religious, and cultural significance.
